Glaze planning

I labeled this post "glaze planning," but the truth is I have been very lazy with keeping up a glaze journal and documenting. That works out just fine when I'm doing the tried and true – but not too good when trying to develop new work.

It's been serendipity when things worked out well, and  plain ol' bad luck when they didn't! Not a very productive way to run a studio practice.

So, I'm committed to changing that. I have been starting out with rough ideas/sketches. Then, taking digital photos as I proceed so that I have an image to tie the notes back to... It gives me a better reference point, especially since my cycle of making, glazing and firing has been interrupted so much lately.

I'm using a new cycle of cups to try out some underglaze/glaze combos. I'll be firing tomorrow. The most promising of these will be used on larger and more complex pieces coming up. And with my notes and photos, I should be able to figure out what I did!

What a great idea to take photos too. I usually keep detailed notes, but images would really insure that I understand exactly what I did when glazing. I'm taking a glaze chemistry class right now and am just about ready to start testing some of the successful glazes on actual pots - I should be sure to take some pictures as I go!

I keep notes and photos, but they are in two different spots - photos in the computer and notes in a notebook. One of these days I would like to add the notes to the photos and have it all on my computer so I can refer to them more easily.

notes... in my head... leave stuff out everywhere while developing a new process... get distracted and then forget half of what you were doing - my standard routine!!

I like the simplicity of your decoration on the cups.

I just took a fantastic glaze workshop with John Brit in NC and definitely recommend it! Not only does he teach about the materials, but great steps for efficient testing and note taking. He just posted his 2009 workshops online. www.JohnBrittPottey.com I know it isn't close to you, but thought I'd mention it anyway.

You and me both - re glaze journals!

I have used such a limited palette for so long out of sheer laziness because it's easy and fast.

I had a couple of cool glaze outcomes last kiln firing, and I think I can replicate most of them - but you know when you're glazing at midnight, and you just want to get it over with - I started getting crazy.

Glaze journal is on my to-do list.

Hi Everyone - So, I'm using IPhoto to keep track of my pics and collate them into a printable journal. It's WAY too much info (and color ink!) to print out. I think I'll save it all in the computer and only print out the stuff I want to incorporate into the next series.
