Etching and mark-making

I enjoy almost all parts of working in clay, but etching and making marks are among my favorite things to do. With a great big window of time, a quiet dog at my feet, my ipod playing an interesting podcast of "All American Life" or "Radio Lab"... Well, it's darn near perfect.

I was going to add Diet Pepsi to the scene of "darn near perfect" above, but I'VE KICKED THE HABIT. Day 4, but who's counting?

This teacup has some crazing and I'm hopeful my next batch
 won't suffer the same fate.

And you do such a good job etching & mark-making -- the joy shows! I gave up diet coke - almost 4 years ago! I don't miss them at all.

Didn't you have a problem with crazing from a recent batch? Is this cup from the same batch, or did it happen again?

Good for you getting off soda-that's a lot of artificial sugar and carbonation to be subjecting your gut and teethe to everyday.

Do you know that a can of regular sweetened soda has around 8 teaspoons of sugar? Crazy huh? I know of people who drink several cans a day. Egad.

I gave up sodas a very long time ago, not sure how long. Every once in a whilte maybe once a year or so I have a coke - 8 teaspoons of sugar - e-gads.

I tried to enlarge the cup photo, but couldn't - wanted to see your etching up close - it looks so nice, I guess I'll try another photo further down on your blog. Can you reglaze? Is it a clear that crazed?

Hi Everybody! You're really out there!

On why the crazing: Yep, this is the same clay/glaze as I've posted about before... so I'm going to Plan B.

On why I've kicked the Diet Pepsi: Causes crazing.

Seriously, I think it does cause something like crazing. Both my sister and my husband are now on pretty "clean" diets due to health problems and the docs have all told them to avoid anything that has ingredients they can't pronounce or has numbers in it.

My sister has a very serious disease called Interstitial Cystitis (which affects men as well as women) that she's battled for about 13 years now. Surgeries, treatments, diets, lots of pain killers. They don't know the cause of it but one theory is a reaction to all the crap in our environment and our food.

She has to be REALLY careful about what she eats and drinks... And here I am totally dumping just about anything into my body.

So, I decided that my health is a gift horse. And I needed to stop looking him in the mouth.

I think I'd better go see if I have any of Jeff Martin's "strong smokey yerba mates" around... I had to look up Yerba mate in Wikipedia:

"Drinking mate with friends from a shared hollow gourd with a metal straw is an extremely common social practice in Argentina, Uruguay..." and some other far-away places.

If I had a hollow gourd and some Yerba mate, I'd share it with all of you!

I agree, I love the texturing and carving part that I do, it's nice to just calmly sit there and work that way, getting lost in the piece...and yes, especially when you're hanging on every word to this american life. When people often ask me how long it takes to carve something I usually don't even know the answer because I enjoy it so much I don't notice the time going by.

how about coffee and tea?

Hiya I usually try 5% silica but if its a big crazing prob you may need to do a rethink glaze fit to body tests..

Back when I was working for UAL, I had a 6 pack habit a day of Diet Coke - I went cold turkey and whew so much better.

I will have one every so often if I go out to lunch or dinner - but it doesn't taste as good as it used to.

Cool about the signs for your pottery biz too!
